Pinot Before Supper

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Taking my own advise - bought a 13th bottle from Wades Wines to - drink on the veranda - my host’s outdoor living room -

Miura - Pinot Noir-  Pisoni Vineyard - Santa Lucia Highlands - 2004 - 14.5 % -

94 points Robert Parker: "A thrilling …fabulously complex perfume of flowers,
forest floor, sweet red and black fruits, and a hint of wood…terrific fruit on the attack, mid-palate, and finish, full body, and
nicely integrated acidity, tannin, and alcohol…(08/06)

Not the overwhelming fruit forward WOW that I was expecting (don’t believe the header card) - on the
first pour - crisp instead of lush - too much acid - after a half glass (always pour half glasses)
- tried again - letting it sit for about 20 minutes - much better - but
NOT the Pisoni experience that I had paid 80 bucks for -

Yes - finished the bottle before supper - fellow house guests taking a few sips -

Yes - dinner was more wonderful - the Miura Pinot - had been a great prep - but the wine was 89 or 90 on my
charts - not he 94 that Parker and the merchant raved about - more like
a $50&nbsp -

International for the diverse selection of wines brought to the tasting - Spain - France - CA - Hungary - Germany - Zimbabwe - yes - Zimbabwe

Hacienda Monasterio - Ribera Del Duero - Spain - 2003 - no matter how good - could have sworn it was an American Cab - or an Italian Tuscan - one day we will get Spain right - always the last choice -&nbsp

Mukayu - Cabernet Sauvignon - Mashonaland East Province - Ruzawi River Valley - Zimbabwe - 2001 - price tag on the bottle reads $7000.00 - didn’t even know they made wine for export - and this good - very nice - now have to get the REAL price -

Avelsbacher Hannerstein - Riesling - Auslese - Mosel/Saar/Ruwer - 1989

OMG

Monday, August 13th, 2007

The square outdoor table beneath the white umbrella upon which I has just hosted a tasting of 10 bottles with seven participants was a forest of glasses and bottles rising from its surface - did we really drink that much - did we really use that much glassware - lets do the math -

7 Bordeaux glasses
7 Chardonnay glasses
7 Water glasses
5 empty Pelligrino bottles
10 empty wine bottles
5 empty decanter/carafes

40 plus vertical objects rising from the surface - backlit by the
garden lights and scattered candles - a sight to behold - a fitting
tribute to the evening’s just concluded event -

White Shirt Re-Redux

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Hot night - 87 degrees and humidity - cool room - refreshing - walk around tasting - 125 guests - plus wine people - plus staff - 7 tables - 19 wines - nice balance -

Most of the offerings were “OK” - a few rising above - one outright Star -

Chalone Vineyards - Monterey County - Chardonnay - 2005 - light oak - 2 out of 3 on the walk-thru tasting scale - would do it again -

Beaulieu Vineyards (BV) - Coast Estates - Sauvigonon Blanc - California - 2005 - did not like this -

Wolffer - Reserve - Chardonnay - Long Island - 2003 - citrus - lime - great back palate - much nicer than its nose - lighter than C - liked by our threesome - good for the price -

Louis Latour - Ardeche - Chardonnay - 2005 - very clean - 1 click

Chateau Mondorion - St. Emilion - 2000 - 2 clicks - very earthy - mineral - rich flavors - very European construction -

Henriot - Souvereain - Blanc de Blanc - NV - very clean and refreshing - a great break on a very hot night -

St. Supery - Sauvignon Blanc - Napa - 2005 - wonderful nose - grassy
- well balanced - $14.95 retail - good bang for the buck - 2 out of 3
on the walk-thru tasting scale

St. Supery - Cabernet Sauvigonon - Napa - 2002 - pucker power -
light - with a light nose - 13.5 % - nice cable - nothing to write home
about -

St. Supery - Elu - Red Wine - Napa - 2002 - 4 on a scale of 3 - the
instant you put this to your lips - you realize its something special -
$65 in a tasting of under $20 - you get a sense of what great wine is
about - rich - smooth - balances - 84% Cab - 14% Merlot - touch of
Petit Verdot - the blend is a bit of Europe made in California -
without becoming a Bordeaux knock off - this was the take home wine -
without a second’s hesitation -

Enjoy -

No Corkscrew No Problem

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Sorin Mihailovici - Edmonton, Canada - wine enthusiast - student of TV production - has created two videos of interest -

How to Remove Red Wine Stains - and - Open a Bottle of Wine Without a Corkscrew -

While applauding the ingenuity of the corkscrew solution - as an urbanite - have to question - “sans corkscrew” would one have the implements necessary for the filmed solution -

Perfect White

Lobster Night at the friend′s Club -

Raw bar - shrimp - crab - oysters - seafood gumbo - massive buffet - fried chicken - roast beef - potatoes - mac & cheese - green beans au gratin - salad - tomatoes - hearts of palm - i.e.  you get the idea - lobsters - steamed - split in half - constantly rolling out of the kitchen -

What to drink - a few had hard liquor - for the rest of us -

Highfield Estates - Sauvignon Blanc - Marborough - NZ - 2005 -

Large - cutting - touch of grass - lots of fruit - the producer says lime - I’d leave it as citrus - enough acid to counter the richness on the plate (plates) - without turning it into &quotan acquired taste&quot wine - everyone who drank it - smiled - i.e. - perfect white for the evening -

60/40 Cab/Merlot - earthy as it should be - very subtle nose - decanted
- opened slightly in the glass - smooth edges - mature - don’t think I
would let this one sit too much longer - very nice against the steak -
thank you Gerry -

Desert was another plus - cheese cake - tart plum tart -

My contribution - Feiler-Artinger Pinot Cuveee Ruster Ausbruch -
1998 - pinot blanc/ newburger/ pinot grigio/ chardonnay - noble rot

Small Pebbles

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

Formal sit down tasting at friend’s Club - White Shirt Tasting III - vertical Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon - 1999 - 2000 - 2001 - 2003 - against Chateau Decru-Beaucaillou - 1999 - 2000 - 2001 - 2003 -

Everyone (100 plus) sat down to eight glasses - carefully positioned - look - don′t taste - until the line by line history of both vineyards have been recited -

OK - taste the first flight - 1 & 2 - 2003 - no need to taste - the aroma of # 2 screamed California Cabernet - i.e - Montelena - massive fruit forward - # 1 was the European - you could smell the terrorr -

Second flight - not far from the first - #3 was Decru - #4 was Montelena -

Third flight - #5 and #6 were much closer to one another - # 5 was simply amazing - balance - very European construction - light nose - subtle - seductive - cool even though it had been sitting on the table in an open glass for over an hour and a half - instantly - the take-home wine of the event -

Flight four - 1999 - they were close - the tannins had mellows in # 8 - the American - # 7 did not have the zip of its fellow Europeans -

Interesting juxtaposition of construction styles - classic cab - (almost 100%) vs a very European St. Julian blend - (2003 was a 80/20 cab/merlot)

After each flight - polling of the room - which was which - which one did everyone like - if you were going to supper in ten minutes - which most of use were - which one would you order - room seemed pretty consistent in its choices - #5 was the winner of the evening -

Comments from the dais also followed each flight - here’s where I get lost - fruit forward - short palate - berry - chocolate - cherry - barnyard nose - sweet - sour - been there - heard that -

But small pebbles - has anyone every tasted small pebbles - how about wet gravel - where are these terms coming from - what’s there difference between the taste of a small pebble and a large pebble -

Love to attend tasting - admire sophistication of my fellow drinkers - but we have to reign ourselves in every once in a while - instead of trying to distance ourselves in a self serving effort to push beyond our brethren in an manner that is destined to backfire in an environment too polite to call the hand -
